10s to 30s Account for Half of Drug Addicts...Dangerous Choices Driven by Curiosity

Recently, the rate of drug addiction among young people in South Korea, from teenagers to those in their 30s, has been rapidly increasing. It is reported that in the first half of 2023, the number of 10-30 year olds who received treatment for drug and narcotic addiction accounted for 45.7% of all addicts. This means that more than 4 out of 10 addicts are young people.

Drug Addiction Status of 10-30 Year Olds in South Korea

By age group, the number of people who received treatment for drug addiction up to June 2023 is as follows:

• Teenagers: 269 (7.2% of the total)
• 20s: 753 (20.3% of the total)
• 30s: 675 (18.2% of the total)

This shows a steady increase from 35.9% in 2019 to 44.4% in 2023. This is a sign that drug addiction among young people is becoming increasingly serious.

Other Age Groups Show a Decreasing Trend

On the other hand, the rate of drug addiction among those in their 40s and 50s and older has been decreasing. The 40s decreased from 16.8% in 2019 to 14.9% this year, and the 50s decreased from 15.5% to 12.6%. The 60s and 70s and older also saw a slight decrease in the rate. This indicates that the problem of addiction is becoming more severe among younger generations relative to other age groups.

Why is Drug Addiction Dangerous?

Drug addiction can start with simple curiosity or a desire for a thrillbut if it leads to addiction, it can cause great suffering not only to the individual but also to those around them. In particular, drug addiction is very dangerous for the following reasons:

1. Psychological and Physical Dependence: Once drugs are used, they disrupt the brain's reward system, leading to a craving for stronger stimulation and making it extremely difficult to quit.

2. Social Problems: Addicted individuals find it difficult to maintain normal daily life, and are more likely to commit crimes or cause social problems.

3. Health Problems: Long-term use can lead to serious health problems, and in severe cases, can even lead to death.

Why Prevention and Treatment are Important

To address the issue of drug addiction among young people, proper preventive education is needed at an early stage. Also, it is crucial to diagnose and receive appropriate treatment early if addiction is suspected. Rep. Park Hee-seung also emphasized that "early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to prevent young people's curiosity and desire for a thrill from leading to addiction."
